For a few hours on Monday morning, Walmart shoppers believed they could pay for their goods with cryptocurrency. The news came from GlobeNewswire, which sent out a press release saying the trading giant would be introducing an option to pay with Litecoin next month.
Unfortunately for Litecoin / Walmart fans it turned out to be fake news. The press release was deleted after just a few hours, and Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove confirmed to CNBC that it was “not authentic”.
All of this sent the Litecoin price on a short roller coaster ride. When the fake press release came out, the price jumped 30 percent from $ 170 to $ 230 in just a few minutes. When the press release turned out to be a fake, however, it quickly returned to just above this original number. At the time of going to press, GlobeNewswire had not commented how the bogus press release came out.
